An Iowa City man has been charged with domestic assault and child endangerment after an incident at his residence early Wednesday morning.
Police talked to the victim, who told them that 28-year-old David Martinez punched her in the face, causing a bloody nose. He also allegedly put his hands around her neck and applied pressure multiple times, causing red marks and other discoloration. She reportedly told officers that she was fearful of Martinez during the confrontation, and he pinned her arms so that she could not get away.
Police say the woman was clearly upset and crying.
She also stated that both of their children were next to her and Martinez during the incident. When the children asked why their mother was bleeding, Martinez allegedly told them that it was just Kool-Aid.
Martinez was taken into custody and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault causing Bodily Injury, Domestic Abuse Assault impeding Airflow, and Child Endangerment. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to eight years in prison.
