An Iowa City man with three previous Domestic Assault convictions over the past two years was charged with the crime again after an alleged assault on the mother of his children.
The incident occurred at the Town and Campus Apartments residence of 35-year-old Brandon Mitchell just after 1:30 am Sunday. The victim told officers the two were arguing over money when Mitchell pushed her on to a bed and choked her with both hands. The woman reported pain, and officers noted significant bruising and marks all around her neck.
Mitchell was previously convicted of domestic assault in Johnson County in April and June of 2020 and February 2021. For Sunday’s incident, he was charged with Domestic Abuse Assault 3rd or subsequent and Domestic Abuse Assault impeding Airflow. If convicted on both counts, Mitchell faces a prison sentence of up to ten years.
