The Iowa City Community School District will be installing vape sensors in select high school restrooms ahead of the 2022-23 school year.

The Press-Citizen reports that the sensors will be installed at City, Liberty, Tate, and West High Schools after the board approved the project last week.

A year ago, the District banned the possession, distribution or use of drug paraphernalia, including vape products, on school property or off grounds at school-sponsored events.

About one in five high-schoolers report they currently use e-cigarettes, with about one in four Iowa high-schoolers saying they’ve tried an e-cigarette.

Funding for the $350,000 project comes from the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy.
