Charges have been dropped against an Iowa City man accused in a stabbing last year.
Iowa City police say two people were fighting with each other at the Quarters on Highway Six East the evening of June 12th, 2021 when then-17-year-old Lazaro Bwayo allegedly armed himself with a knife and stabbed one of the subjects in the abdomen. The victim was rushed to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for immediate surgery due to the potential life-threatening severity of his injuries.
Surveillance video recorded the incident, and Bwayo was arrested on August 11th of last year. He faced Going Armed with Intent and Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon charges, but Judge Lars Anderson granted a motion to dismiss those counts on October 7th. Bwayo still faced a charge of Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury, a Class C Felony punishable by a prison term of up to ten years if convicted. That charge was dismissed on Thursday.
A no-contact order in the case was also dropped.
