Two Iowa City men arrested after alleged bike theft

Two Iowa City men were taken into custody Wednesday morning after allegedly being caught cutting a bike cable and stealing a bike from Trowbridge Hall.

According to the arrest reports, the incident occurred just before 8:30. 30-year-old Willie Collins of Oakcrest Street and 29-year old Gregory Echols were reportedly observed by witnesses cutting a cable lock on a Trek bike and riding away with it. The two were located about a block away, with Collins riding the bike. He allegedly admitted cutting the lock and taking the bike.

Value of the bike and the lock was valued at approximately $780.

Collins was wearing a black pouch that reportedly contained a glass meth pipe, and a small baggie of a substance Collins allegedly stated was meth was found in his pants pocket.

Collins was charged with 4th degree Theft, 5th degree Criminal Mischief, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Possession of drug paraphernalia.  He faces up to 26 months in jail if convicted.

Echols was charged with Trespass causing Damage, a serious misdemeanor.
