As boaters continue to flock to Coralville Lake to boat regardless of gas prices, DNR officers are working to keep the reservoir safe by cracking down on intoxicated boaters.
A Norway Iowa man learned that on Sunday night.
An officer observed 36-year-old Erik Marks operating a boat on the Reservoir, with his 14-year-old son in control under his supervision without the required certification. The boat had a faulty navigation light that was flashing on and off, and the boat was stopped.
The officer had seen Marks drinking throughout the day, as reportedly evidenced by his slurred speech, odor of ingested alcohol, and bloodshot watery eyes. He allegedly was argumentative and didn’t cooperate with initial sobriety testing. Marks did submit to the seated battery of tests, and was found to be intoxicated. A PBT showed his blood-alcohol level at .132 percent.
Marks was charged with operating a motorboat while intoxicated and faces up to a year in jail if convicted.
