The West Liberty City Council voted to authorize a letter of intent between the City of West Liberty and its volunteer fire department at their meeting earlier this week.

KCRG TV reports that the letter says all parties are committed to coming to an agreement no later than October 1st.

The volunteer fire department threatened to end their relationship with the city, citing an escalating hostility towards the group. The firefighters claimed that the city was demanding complete control over their operations and finances. They also claimed the city was mixing funds earmarked for the fire department with the City’s general account.

The firefighters want West Liberty to join their 28E association, which would be governed by a Board including volunteer firefighters and representatives from the rural areas they serve.

West Liberty Fire District officials say they won’t drop their current litigation with the City of West Liberty until the agreement is reached.
