The University of Iowa has filed suit against two contractors who the school argues installed faulty windows in the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

Official documents filed with the Iowa Board of Regents indicate inspectors found 77 damaged or at-risk windows in need of immediate repair. The cost to apply 3M safety film to the windows was estimated at over $770,000.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports the playground at the Children’s Hospital was closed as a precaution.

School officials asked the regents in April for $10 million to $15 million to replace two floors of damaged windows at the hospital, which opened only five years ago.
According to a UI news release, the windows have since been fortified and will be safe until their eventual replacement. Earlier indications were UI officials wanted the work done this summer.

The contractors named in the lawsuit are Knutson Construction of Iowa City and Cupples Construction of Illinois. Details have not been released.
