An area transient who was found to have a warrant for her arrest faces additional charges after allegedly fighting with authorities.
Police were interacting with 21-year-old Candace Barnes on Gilbert Street Wednesday morning when they discovered there was an active warrant for her arrest because she failed to show up for a case management conference last month on 4th degree criminal mischief charges.
When notified of the warrant, Barnes tried to leave the scene. She was placed under arrest, and allegedly physically fought with the officers as she was being handcuffed, and had to be carried to the squad car after refusing to walk.
Post arrest, Barnes was allegedly found in possession of a plastic baggie containing marijuana. Additionally, she fought with deputies at the Johnson County Jail as they were trying to place her in a holding cell. Barnes reportedly bit a deputy’s leg, causing the deputy to go to the hospital for treatment.
Barnes faces Interference with Official Acts, Marijuana possession, and Assault on persons in Certain Occupations causing Injury. If convicted on all counts from Wednesday’s incidents, Barnes faces a sentence of over three years.
