A Good Samaritan who saw a hit and run was arrested after following the fleeing motorist and brandishing a handgun at them.
The incident occurred on Sunday night around 8:15 near Highway 6 at Sycamore Street. 24-year-old Hussein Alshabeeb of Hollywood Court in Iowa City allegedly witnessed a motor vehicle accident that he wasn’t involved in and watched one of the parties leave the scene.
Alshabeeb got in into his vehicle and chased down the motorist, pulling in front of the other vehicle to cut them off. He then allegedly pulled out a handgun and showed it to the motorist. The two people inside the fleeing vehicle told officers that Alshabeeb did not point the handgun at them, but did show it to them. They also reported that Alshabeeb told them to turn around or he was going to shoot them.
When interviewed by police, Alshabeeb admitted to brandishing the gun so the fleeing motorist could see it, but did not point it at them.
Alshabeeb was taken into custody and charged with first degree Harassment, Assault while displaying a Dangerous Weapon, Person Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons, Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, and Going Armed with Intent. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to a maximum 15 years in prison.
