An online petition is circulating calling for City High Assistant Principal Scott Jespersen to be reinstated immediately.
Jespersen was placed on administrative leave by the Iowa City Community School District following a vandalism incident at the school last weekend.
City High parents told the Cedar Rapids Gazette that Jespersen allowed a select few students into the school Sunday night so they could hang balloons and streamers. Other, unauthorized students allegedly seized the opportunity to enter the school and spray paint walls, pour syrup on various items and cut up historical photos, among other damages.
Iowa City Police dispatched to the scene just before 4am Monday indicated the incident may have been a senior prank gone awry. The district has yet to comment, including giving a damage estimate.
Parents and students have raised over $1,500 so far to pay for the damage. An online petition calling for Jespersen to be reinstated had over 500 signatures as of Friday morning.
