An Iowa City man faces weapons charge after allegedly handling a weapon on two separate occasions despite being a convicted felon.
Police say 19-year-old Javeyel Jones of South Scott Boulevard was at Scheels in Coralville in the late afternoon hours of April 28th, and was allegedly seen on video surveillance holding and examining a Ruger AR556 rifle. He reportedly told staff that he would return at a later date to purchase a different firearm.
A warrant was issued for his arrest Wednesday, and later that afternoon, Jones was observed entering a vehicle in his parking lot. Officers made contact, and a search warrant was executed on the vehicle. Police found a loaded Glock 10mm handgun. The other person in the vehicle stated that Jones brought his gun back to him, but law enforcement reportedly had prior knowledge that Jones was present when the weapon was purchased.
The arrest report indicates that they believe the weapon was bought for Jones as part of a straw purchase. The other person told police that he was letting Jones hold onto the weapon.
Jones is prohibited from having weapons due to a trafficking felony while a juvenile. He was taken into custody and charged with two counts of Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon. If convicted on both charges, Jones could be sentenced to up to ten years in prison.
