Back-to-back police chases in North Liberty and Coralville ended with a crash and arrest.
North Liberty Police say they were alerted to a 2022 GMC Yukon exhibiting suspicious behavior near the corner of Front and Zeller Streets just after 1:45 Thursday morning. The arriving officer reported finding the vehicle speeding and running through stop signs. The officer attempted a traffic stop by activating his lights and siren, but the car allegedly sped away, disregarding traffic control devices. The pursuit was terminated for safety reasons.
The suspect’s vehicle was encountered by Coralville Police a short time later, and another pursuit ensued. This time, the Yukon crashed and was disabled.
The driver, identified as 19-year-old Daniel Delgado of Las Vegas, Nevada, allegedly told police he knew he’d made a mistake. He reportedly admitted he didn’t know how fast he was going, but he knew he was “zooming”. Police say at one point, Delgado was travelling at 80 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone on Front Street.
Delgado is charged with Eluding at Over 25 Miles Per Hour Over the Speed Limit. If convicted, he faces a maximum of two years in jail.
