An Iowa City man has been arrested after allegedly attempting to steal a locked bike on the University of Iowa campus.

Police say the incident occurred on the north side of Burge Residence Hall at around 2:30 am Tuesday. 30-year-old Deandre Irby of South Dodge Street was allegedly seen on surveillance video casing the bike rack there. He was then seen selecting a mountain bike valued at approximately $560, concealing himself with an umbrella, and reportedly taking control of the bike.

Irby used a pair of wire cutters to attempt to cut and damage a cable lock. He was caught in the act by officers. Post Miranda, Irby allegedly admitted that he intended to take the bike, ride it around town, and then ride home with it. Irby also admitted to damaging the cable lock.

Irby also allegedly admitted to stealing a red rear LED light from a different bike on the rack before trying to steal the mountain bike. A search of his person also reportedly turned up several state ID and credit cards that did not belong to him. Irby also allegedly had a glass smoking pipe that contained meth residue. He reportedly admitted that the pipe was used for smoking meth.

Irby faces charges of 4th degree Theft, 5th degree Theft, 5th degree Criminal Mischief, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. If convicted on all counts, Irby could be sentenced to 15 months in jail.
