An Iowa City man has been arrested after allegedly breaking into the residence of a woman he previously lived with and assaulting her.

Police were called to the woman’s Lone Tree residence at approximately 11:20 pm Tuesday by the victim, who reported that 23-year-old Dalton Hoit of Hawk Ridge Drive was fighting inside and breaking things. Upon arrival, Hoit was reportedly found outside the residence, and stated that he had gone there to get items that belonged to him, but that he “messed up” and should not have come to the residence.

According to the woman, Hoit showed up in her bedroom while she was sleeping and started yelling at her. He allegedly told her, “I was ripped off, so now I am going to rip you off.” He also reportedly told her that he was going to kill her.

Hoit allegedly tried to take the woman’s purse, then used a large metal pole to strike her in the back of the head, arm, and backside. Police on scene reportedly observed a bleeding gash on the woman’s left arm, and the metal pole still had her hair on the end of it.

Hoit also reportedly smashed the front door glass and broke some plant holders in the residence.

The arrest report indicates that Hoit and the woman had been living together in March and April of this year.

Hoit was arrested and charged with 1st degree Robbery, Domestic Abuse with Intent to inflict Serious Injury, 5th degree Criminal Mischief, and 1st degree Harassment. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to over 29 years in prison.

A no-contact  order was requested by the victim.
