An Independence, Iowa man was reportedly over three times the legal limit to drive when he was arrested for his 2nd OWI Friday night.
Troopers came upon 24-year-old Colin Butzlaff in the southbound lanes of I-380 at the 3 mile marker just after 9:30 pm. He was reportedly stuck in the mud on the shoulder, and was attempting to back out of the mud onto the roadway.
Butzlaff allegedly admitted that he had been driving and a tire punctured, causing him to lose control and end up on the shoulder. Troopers noticed the odor of alcoholic beverages coming from the inside of the vehicle, and Butzlaff reportedly had bloodshot watery eyes with slurred speech.
He showed measurable impairment on field tests, and was given a PBT showing a blood-alcohol level of .261 percent. A subsequent Datamaster reading was reported at .247 percent, still over three times the legal limit to drive.
Butzlaff was taken into custody and charged with OWI second offense, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to two years if convicted.
