An area transient who was wanted on a theft warrant for allegedly shoplifting from the Iowa City Walmart was taken into custody after returning to the store.
Officers were dispatched to the store around 7:15 pm Friday on reports of a trespass. Upon arrival, they confronted 30-year-old Willie Collins, who had warrants for his arrest. Once informed of his impending arrest, Collins reportedly refused to put his hands behind his back, and attempted to run from officers.
According to the police report, Collins “had to be lowered to the ground,” and needed his arms pulled behind his back. An officer sustained a bloody elbow during the incident.
Collins had previously been trespassed from the store on April 1 after allegedly walking out with nearly $400 in merchandise without paying for it. Among the items reportedly taken were a suitcase, bike helmet, fishing equipment, and tools. A Loss prevention employee confronted Collins at the time and was asked to stop. He allegedly continued off the property with the merchandise.
The Loss Prevention employee confronted Collins on March 21st in a different shoplifting incident, at which time he threatened to shoot the employee. A no-contact order was issued against Collins for his alleged threat.
The transient faces several charges. They include two contempt charges for violating the no-contact order; trespass; 4th degree theft, and Interference with Official Acts causing Bodily Injury. If convicted, Collins could be sentenced to up to over two years in jail.
