The man convicted of stabbing a man to death in a Cedar Rapids hotel last year will spend ten years in prison.

The Gazette reports that 40-year-old Victoriano Dias-Barrera originally was charged with first-degree murder, going armed with intent and assault while displaying a dangerous weapon. He pleaded guilty Monday to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.

Witnesses said Dias-Barrera was arguing with the victim, Victor Huerta, at the Residence Inn on Dodge Road Northeast on April 4th 2021. The argument escalated and led to Dias Barrera arming himself with a knife and plunging it into Huerta’s chest.

First responders attempted to save the man’s life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dias-Barrera, of Honduras, will be deported after serving his sentence.
