Short’s Burger and Shine has closed its downtown Iowa City location, citing building issues.
The Press-Citizen reports that the restaurant posted a sign on its front door this week saying that they would be closed for the foreseeable future.
Garland Rosenbush, representing the business owner, told the newspaper that the building is in serious need of repair and the restaurant isn’t willing to finance it, saying that the business needs investment, but the building itself is crumbling and it doesn’t make sense to borrow money to make improvements if the building itself isn’t going to be updated.
Among the problems are the smell of stale water and mold due to what Rosenbush calls severe damage to the back and side walls beneath the bathrooms and kitchen. Short’s has been in contact with the property owners.
Short’s has been a downtown fixture since 2008; the Eastside location and its Marion location will remain open.
