The City of Tiffin’s Volunteer Fire Department says he’s currently understaffed.
KCRG TV reports that the town, which has grown around 230 percent over the last decade, has seen an increase in 9-1-1 calls. They responded to 441 calls in 2021, and as of this week, calls are nearly 50 ahead of the same period last year.
Chief Bill Hall tells the station that 18 volunteer firefighters just isn’t enough, and he’s worried about burnout among the volunteers he does have.
City Council Member Skylar Limkemann is also a volunteer, and has considered bringing on paid firefighters. However, with the rapid growth Tiffin is still experiencing, he said there have been other demands on the city’s funds.
Chief Hall says they’re trying to incentivize volunteers by offering pay-per-call. They’ve also applied for grants to help pay volunteers.
