2 arrested for OWI after one-vehicle accident SE of Iowa City

Two suspects were arrested for drunk driving following a one-vehicle accident southeast of Iowa City early Sunday morning.

According to arrest records, Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle with its lights off on Taft Avenue near 480th Street just before 2am. Arriving officers found the vehicle in question, a 2008 Chevy Avalanche, which was being driven by 19-year-old Orbil Aramas of Washington. Aramas allegedly told investigators that he drove to the area to help a friend who had driven into a ditch. Deputies say Aramas showed signs of intoxication, admitted to drinking two beers prior to driving, admitted to not having a driver’s license, and registered a breath alcohol level of .087%.

Aramas was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated and Driving Without a License.

Just before 3:15am Sunday morning deputies found a 2007 Chevy Impala in a ditch along Taft Avenue just south of the Breckenridge Estates manufactured housing community. Arriving officers say the driver, identified as 18-year-old Weslin Martinez-Guterrez of Iowa City, showed signs of intoxication, performed poorly on field sobriety tests, and had an open container of alcohol inside the vehicle. He was arrested and charged with OWI, Failure to Maintain Control and Possession of Alcohol Under the Legal Age.
