The University of Iowa has announced that they’ve distributed the last round of COVID -19 relief dollars to over 9000 undergraduate and graduate students.

The Daily Iowan reports that an article posted on the university’s COVID-19 website says the awards averaged a little over $1180 per recipient and were $56 less than the fall awards. The monies came from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund.

The funds were distributed using information from students’ FAFSA, or Free Application for Student Financial Aid, which determined who received priority and the largest awards.

For the 2021-22 school year, international students, DACA students, undocumented and other non-US citizens were added as groups eligible for funding.

The article says 6885 undergraduate students received funding totaling $8,354,110, while 2030 graduate and professional students received a total of $2,221,719.

The remainder of the funding went to 144 international, DACA, and undocumented students who received $144,900.

About half of the undergraduates who received the funding also were recipients of PELL Grants, which the article says demonstrates the university’s commitment to using federal aid to support students.
