An Iowa City man with a half-dozen domestic assault convictions on his record has been charged with the offense again.
Witnesses contacted police just after 5pm Thursday, saying they saw 46-year-old George Jackson of East Market Street assaulting the victim. Upon arrival, they learned that he punched the woman in the jaw, leaving a red mark and pain. Jackson allegedly told the woman that he was going to kill her, and said if she ever called the police he would kill her. Police were unable to locate Jackson after the alleged assault.
Then around 9:15 that same night, Jackson went back to the woman’s residence and reportedly assaulted her again. He’s accused of kicking in the woman’s front door to get in. She suffered a bloody nose, and attempted to call police for help, but Jackson reportedly took her phone away from her.
The man was located a few blocks away from the scene, with the victim’s phone in his pocket. Jackson allegedly had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred his words, and had the odor of ingested alcohol. He reportedly admitted to being intoxicated but refused a post-arrest PBT. He also allegedly admitted that taking the phone amounted to a robbery.
For the earlier incident, Jackson was charged with Domestic Abuse Assault 3rd or Subsequent Offence and 1st degree Harassment. For the later incident, he faces another Domestic Abuse Assault charge, as well as 1st degree Burglary, 2nd degree Robbery, 4th degree Theft, Obstruction of Emergency Communications, and Public Intoxication. If convicted on all counts, Jackson could be sentenced to over 48 years in prison.
A no-contact order was requested by the victim. Authorities say that the two have been in a months-long relationship, living together at each other’s apartments.
