An Iowa City man faces up to almost a half-century in prison if convicted on numerous charges stemming from a reported robbery, burglary and assault Thursday evening.
The charges relate to two separate incidents. The first was reported just after 5pm, when 46-year-old George Jackson allegedly punched a woman in the face at his East Market Street residence, then threatened to kill her if she called the police. He left before police could arrive on the scene.
Just over four hours later, Jackson allegedly went to the woman’s apartment, which is in the same building as his. Police say he kicked in the door and assaulted her, leaving her with a bloody nose. Jackson allegedly took the woman’s phone when she tried to call the police, then fled on foot.
Iowa City Police say they found Jackson two blocks away. He allegedly had the woman’s phone on his person and showed signs of intoxication. Investigators say he admitted to drinking and to being at the woman’s apartment, but claimed the door was already kicked in when he arrived.
According to arrest records, Jackson and his alleged victim had been in a relationship and had been living together between the two apartments. He has six different domestic abuse convictions out of Cook County, Illinois.
Jackson is charged with two counts of Domestic Abuse Assault – 3rd or Subsequent Offense and one count each of 2nd Degree Robbery, 1st Degree Burglary, 1st Degree Harassment, Obstruction of Emergency Communications, 4th Degree Theft, and Public Intoxication. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over 48 years in prison.
