A West Liberty man who confronted his ex in downtown Iowa City and reportedly assaulted her over the summer has been arrested on a warrant stemming from that incident.

Police say 23-year-old Andres Garcia-Vargas saw the woman leaving downtown Iowa City with another man the evening of June 5th between midnight and after the bars closed. He confronted her in the 200 block of South Capitol Street and allegedly punched her in the face, causing her to fall down. The woman suffered pain and swelling to her cheek and an injury to her hand.

Garcia-Vargas and the woman were separated at the time, after previously cohabitating in a relationship that produced two children.

A warrant was issued for Garcia-Vargas’ arrest on February 18th and he was taken into custody just after midnight Thursday. He was charged with domestic abuse assault causing injury, a serious misdemeanor. A no-contact order was requested by the woman.
