An Iowa City man who allegedly fought with officers as he was being taken into custody has been charged with causing minor injuries to them.

The incident occurred in the 400 block of the Coralville Strip in the early evening hours of October 10th. Police were called to a fight in progress and came into contact with 52-year-old Kenneth Smith of Davis Street. He refused to identify himself while standing on an outside balcony, holding an open container of liquor.

Smith allegedly had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, and continued to refuse to comply with commands. Officers attempted to place him in handcuffs, and he reportedly began fighting with them. Smith was then assisted to the ground so that restraints could be applied. The two officers involved in the incident received minor injuries.

A post arrest PBT showed Smith’s blood-alcohol level at .163 percent.

A warrant was requested for Smith’s arrest the next day and he was booked at the Johnson County Jail just before 10pm Wednesday. He’s been charged with Interference with Official Acts causing Bodily Injury and Public Intoxication. If convicted on both counts, Smith faces a sentence of up to 13 months.
