Iowa City Police say a man with a history of alleged harassment and assaults against his neighbors brought a pizza box to his neighbor’s door, then threatened a child.
The alleged incident was reported just before 3:45pm on St. Patrick’s Day. Witnesses say 38-year-old Warren McDuffie of Amhurst Street had brought a pizza box to his neighbor’s house across the street. Once at the front door, McDuffie allegedly yelled at one of the children outside, threatening to beat him and calling him several discriminatory names.
Police say McDuffie was given a criminal trespass warning for the address in May of 2021 after he allegedly punched a resident in the back of the head and threatened him with a knife. Police say two months earlier McDuffie tried to throw someone out of a second-story window at or near his house. Trial on Assault Causing Bodily Injury charges in both cases is set for May 10th.
In 2019 McDuffie was fined $65 after police say he sprayed chemical irritant on his wife while she was in the shower. The two had been going through a divorce at the time.
McDuffie was taken into custody for the St. Patrick’s Day pizza box incident after an ICPD officer saw him outside his home just after midnight Wednesday morning. Once in custody, three used and/or ready needles and meth pipe were reportedly found on his person. McDuffie allegedly told police he found the items near his house, and had no idea whose they were.
McDuffie is charged with 2nd Degree Harassment, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of 25 months in jail.
