A local Casey’s employee faces charges that she stole thousands of dollars in gift cards from her employer.

According to arrest records, Casey’s asset protection noticed several shortages from its Solon store on South Market Street and reviewed security video. It allegedly shows an employee, 20-year-old Ashley Withey of Kirkwood Court in Cedar Rapids, make several transactions involving pre-paid cards and gift cards with no corresponding currency received.

There were a total of 12 transactions in February and March totaling $5,427.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says Withey admitted to making the transactions, not paying for them, and attempting to alter the books to hide the thefts.  She allegedly claimed she spent all the money, had no cards left, and had no plans to reimburse the business.

Withey was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 4:15 Monday afternoon and charged with 2nd Degree Theft. If convicted, she faces a maximum of five years in prison.
