Three juveniles involved in a large fight at Northwest Junior High School face criminal charges, including assaulting a police officer.

The Johnson County Joint Emergency Communication Center web site indicates officers were called to the school just before 3pm Thursday after a request for extra patrol. Just after 3pm a fight was reported involving numerous Northwest Junior High students and students from other schools. School officials told KWWL television that the fight was too large for school staff to handle alone.

Arriving officers attempted to break up the brawl. In the process, at least one officer was injured.

Coralville Police Chief Shane Kron told KWWL that three juveniles have been charged in the case. The charges include Assault on a Police Officer Causing Bodily Injury, Assault on a Police Officer, Interference With Official Acts and Disorderly Conduct.

Northwest Junior High officials sent an email to parents and staff explaining the situation and assuring that disciplinary action will be taken.

The incident remains under investigation.
