An Iowa City man has been arrested after allegedly breaking into a Tiffin gas station and stealing desserts.
Police say the incident occurred at the Depot Express on West Marengo Road just before 3:30am Thursday, where several burglary alarms had gone off. The business was closed at the time, and there was a small bent metal tool located in front of the door that store employees said was picked open.
Surveillance shows a male wearing a grey sweatshirt in the store. He allegedly grabbed two Hot Blonde brand desserts and left the store as alarms went off. The man, identified as 32-year-old Austin Snakenberg of South Gilbert Street, was located wearing the same clothing in a truck parked in the street behind Depot Express.
Snakenberg allegedly had a prescription drug container bearing someone else’s name sitting between his legs with the pills inside and scattered around him. There was also reportedly a baggie of a crystal-like substance located on the driver’s seat. Officers also located the two dessert items taken from the store, which were verified by store employees as those Snakenberg allegedly took while on video.
Police arrested the man and charged him with 3rd degree Burglary, 5th degree Theft, Unlawful Possession of a Prescription Drug, and Possession of a Controlled Substance. If convicted on all counts, Snakenberg could be sentenced to over seven years in prison.
