An Iowa City man convicted on a theft charge from October 2020 has been arrested after allegedly violating his probation by getting involved in a fight at Tate High School this past September.
Police say they were called to the school on Mall Drive around 10am on September 13th of last year. 19-year-old Byron Jackson allegedly assaulted another student by punching him about the body and head multiple times. He reportedly yelled at and verbally threatened another student, and openly challenged other students to fight by yelling “who’s next?”
Those actions allegedly alarmed and caused concern amongst the staff and students at the school.
A check of Jackson’s records showed that he was on probation after being accused of stealing a running 2013 Hyundai from the 2000 block of Broadway Street to go to the grocery store on October 28th, 2020. Police found him about 45 mintues later operating the vehicle near Broadway and Crosspark Avenue. He pulled into a parking lot nearby and ran into an apartment building. Jackson was located and admitted to taking the vehicle.
He was originally charged with First Degree Theft; that charge was pleaded down in July 2021 to Operating a Vehicle without Owner Consent. Jackson was given a deferred judgement and one year probation.
Jackson was charged with Disorderly Conduct for the incident at Tate, a violation of his probation. A warrant was issued on September 16th and He was arrested Monday. With the charge from 2020, Jackson could now be sentenced to over two years in jail if convicted.
