An Iowa City man was taken into custody early Monday after his personal items were allegedly found in a stolen car.
An officer was called to the area of Sandusky and Taylor Drives around 1:15Am on reports of a possibly stolen vehicle in the area. It was reportedly located in the 2200 block of Taylor Drive, with the plate removed and partially hidden by items of clothing in the backseat. A check of the vehicle identification number showed that the vehicle was stolen out of Iowa City on March 14th.
34-year-old Darryl Minniefield of South Gilbert Street was located in the residence. He reportedly denied having any knowledge of the stolen vehicle, stating that the vehicle wasn’t at the residence when he arrived there. He added that he walked from Coralville to the residence earlier in the evening.
A subsequent search of the vehicle turned up a Coralville Food Pantry visit card with Minniefield’s last name, and paperwork from the 6th Judicial District Court with his full name was reportedly located in a backpack on the front seat. Minniefield continued to deny knowing how or why his property was in the vehicle.
He was taken into custody and charged with 2nd degree Theft, a Class D felony. If convicted, Minniefield faces a prison sentence of up to five years.
