An Iowa City man faces several charges after allegedly resisting officers and medical personnel during an arrest.

According to the criminal complaints, 31-year-old Gage Wenthe of the Town and Campus Apartments on Arthur Street complied during handcuffing, but when taken to a waiting squad car stated, “I’m not going in that car.” It reportedly took five officers to get Wenthe into leg shackles and into the vehicle. During the struggle, he allegedly kicked at officers, attempted to grab at two officer firearms, and broke a mounting device for a body camera as he dislodged it.

Once at the emergency room at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, seven nurses and security officers were reportedly employed to restrain Wenthe. He allegedly fought, kicked, and tried to bite nurses, security and police officers. One security person suffered abrasions, lacerations and was punched in the arm. Wenthe reportedly told several nurses that he would kill them, and screamed at the top of his lungs, disrupting the general quiet of the ER area. Wenthe also allegedly threatened to “take” all the personnel involved once he was out of restraints.

Wenthe faces two counts of 1st degree Harassment, Disarming a Police Officer, Interference with Official Acts, 5th degree Criminal Mischief, Assault Causing injury to Peace Officers, and Disorderly Conduct. If convicted on all charges, he could be sentenced to over eleven years in prison.
