Iowa City man accused of breaking into ex-girlfriend’s apartment and assaulting her

An Iowa City man whose relationship with a woman ended a month ago is accused of entering her apartment and choking her.

According to the arrest reports, 30-year-old Juan Figueroa Garcia of South Scott Boulevard went to the woman’s Lakeside Drive apartment at approximately 4:30 Sunday morning. The woman told police that she was sleeping and woke up to Figueroa Garcia choking her. He then allegedly grabbed a bible and threw it at her.

The woman tried to get out of her apartment to get help, but Figueroa Garcia allegedly grabbed her by the hair and pulled her to his parent’s apartment in the same building. The ex-girlfriend was able to enter the parents’ apartment, but Figueroa also entered and punched his father in the eye.

Arriving police found the ex-girlfriend with red marks on her neck consistent with strangulation, a scratch on her nose and a swollen forehead. Figueroa Garcia’s father had a swollen eye.

The woman said that she and Figueroa Garcia were together for about a year and lived together but broke up about a month ago.

Figueroa Garcia faces a number of charges. They include Assault causing Injury, Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury, Domestic Abuse Assault impeding Airflow, and 1st degree Burglary. If convicted on all counts, he faces a prison term of up to 29 years.
