An Iowa City man has been taken into custody after an alleged domestic dispute involving a firearm.

According to an ICPD news release, officers responded to the 100 block of S. Westminster St. just before 3:30 Tuesday afternoon for a report of an armed subject.
Once officers arrived, it was determined that an adult male was alone in the residence and had fired a gun from inside.

Further investigation determined that 29-year-old Caleb McDowell had been in a physical and verbal dispute with his grandmother when she called his father to the residence to mediate. Police say McDowell assaulted his father when he arrived on the scene, then grabbed a 9mm Ruger from behind the couch and pointed it at him. The father was able to wrestle the gun away and flee the residence to call police.

McDowell reportedly barricaded himself inside the residence before eventually surrendering without incident. Traffic was shut down during the incident and surrounding residences were evacuated.

McDowell is charged with Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon, Domestic Abuse Assault With Intent to Commit Serious Injury and Domestic Abuse Assault Causing Injury. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of five years in prison.
