Iowa City residents who use Section 8 housing vouchers can now be away from their residences for longer periods of time.

The Iowa City city council voted unanimously Tuesday night to allow Section 8 users to be away from their homes for as long as 60 days at a time without risking their eligibility. The previous limit had been 30 days.

The Center For Worker Justice of Eastern Iowa pushed for the extension, arguing that one month was not enough time for residents who have families in other counties to visit their relatives abroad.

Also Tuesday night, the council declined to enact criminal penalties for public speakers at council meetings who are deemed disruptive.
