The City of Iowa City has canceled the Wednesday evening farmer’s markets for the 2022 season.

According to the Cedar Rapids Gazette, city officials contacted vendors who have already signed up that the markets were canceled due to not enough other vendors agreeing to participate. At least 15 vendors were needed to hold the markets, but only 11 had signed up by the February 15th deadline.

A letter sent out to vendors indicated participation numbers in the Wednesday markets had been declining steadily even before the pandemic. Those who had already signed up will be fully reimbursed.

The Saturday farmer’s markets will continue as scheduled this year at the Chauncey Swan parking ramp starting in May. The city will consider bringing back the Wednesday markets for 2023.
