A University of Iowa student faces charges that he committed an assault at a Hawkeye basketball game.

According to the UI Police arrest log, 20-year-old Anthony Raffaelli of Mayflower Hall was taken into custody just before 10:15 Wednesday night. Arrest reports indicate Raffaelli punched another subject in the face around 7:30pm Tuesday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena after the alleged victim had already been struck by another person. Witnesses say a woman tried to pull the victim away after the first attack, which is when Raffaelli allegedly committed the assault.

The incident reportedly occurred near the end of the Iowa men’s basketball team’s 86-60 win over Michigan State.

A witness told police the attack was unprovoked. Raffaelli claimed it was in self-defense.

The alleged victim reported suffering a scratch, redness, swelling and pain to the face. Raffaelli is charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury, a Serious Misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of one year in jail.

The other suspect has yet to be charged.
