Officials with the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics told the state Board of Regents Wednesday that they will be replacing all windows in the new bridge connecting the Stead Family Children’s Hospital to the main campus.
The possibility was raised that the scope of faulty windows installed could lead to every window in the Stead Family building being replaced.
The Gazette reports that UI Senior Vice President for Finance and Operations Rod Lehnertz told Regents that the window replacement project might not be just on specific floors, and asked the Regents to approve a “construction manager at risk” to coordinate what could be a larger project.
The Board approved an initial $3.6 million to replace the windows on the bridge, which will start in September. The faulty windows were originally believed to be limited to two floors of the Children’s Hospital and the bridge, and the UIHC plans to spend up to $15 million in total.
Lehnertz says that officials are working with designers, contractors, manufacturers and all other responsible parties to ensure the replacements are reliable and installed correctly. They’re also trying to determine who would be responsible for reimbursement.
