Iowa State Patrol looking to hire more troopers

The Iowa State Patrol is looking to hire more troopers, and officials say the pool of applicants has dwindled over the years.

KCRG TV talked to Trooper Robert Conrad at Post 11 in Cedar Rapids. He said back in the 90’s when he got hired, he was part of a pool of 2500 applicants for less than 50 positions. Now, he says they struggle to get 200 applicants.

Conrad added that now, new hires get to choose where in the state they want to work.

Cherokee Iowa district Lieutenant Mindy Coe told the station that hiring more females, minorities and veterans are a priority.

On the dps.iowa.gov website, the hiring page says the State Patrol is looking for qualities of high personal ethics, superior physical and mental capabilities, and a commitment to serve and protect others. A college degree is not a necessary requisite for being hired.
