CR firefighters battle Geneva Towers blaze

Cedar Rapids firefighters were called to a reported fire at Geneva Towers on 5th Street SE early Sunday morning.

According to a CRFD news release, firefighters arrived on the scene just after midnight to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the 9th floor that quickly spread to the 10th.   Firefighters used a combination of external firefighting apparatus including high-rise ladders and suppression systems in the building to attack the fire.

A total building evacuation was required. All residents were moved to a nearby church. One resident was transported to a special treatment center for smoke inhalation and possible heat-related injuries.   A small but unknown number of residents were taken to local hospitals for treatment of smoke exposure and medical issues.

No injuries were reported by firefighters.

Firefighting operations ceased just before 3:00 a.m. No injuries to firefighters were reported.

Investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the fire.
