A Cedar Rapids man was arrested Friday afternoon in North Liberty for illegally possessing a firearm he’d purchased just one day earlier.

North Liberty Police say they pulled over a 2007 Hyundai Elantra with an expired registration on Penn Street near Kansas Avenue just before 3pm. One of the passengers, identified as 23-year-old Dustin Farnstrom of Drake Street SW, allegedly admitted to having a 9mm handgun on his person.

A police K9 search of the vehicle turned up a baggie of what appeared to be marijuana on the floor under where Farnstrom had been seated. Investigators say Farnstrom admitted to using marijuana the previous day, which is the same day he purchased the gun at Scheels in Coralville. As part of the purchase, Farnstrom signed ATF documents indicating he was not a user of illegal drugs.

Farnstrom was arrested and charged with Carrying Weapons, Fraudulent Purchase of a Firearm and Possession of a Controlled Substance. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of seven years in prison.
