An Iowa City man was allegedly found with drugs, a pistol, and an AK-47 in his car during an early Thursday morning traffic stop.
Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies pulled over a southbound 2014 Chevy Malibu for speeding just north of the fairgrounds exit on Highway 218 just after 2am Thursday. The car was searched after the deputy reported smelling the odor of marijuana and alcohol. The search turned up a Glock pistol, an AK-47, two scales, two large containers of baggies containing what appeared to be marijuana, and a one-hitter pipe. Investigators say the driver, identified as 32-year-old Alex Huberty of Friendship Street, had more alleged marijuana and a pipe on his person.
Huberty also allegedly showed signs of intoxication. He scored a .00% on Datamaster testing, and refused urine and chemical testing. Deputies say a small black bag containing baggies of a crystal-like substance fell from Huberty’s pocket during his processing.
Huberty is charged with Possession of a Weapon While Intoxicated, Operating While Intoxicated, a Controlled Substance Violation, and two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance – 3rd or Subsequent Offense. If convicted on all charges, Huberty faces a maximum of 14 years in prison.
