Iowa City man arrested after allegedly carrying weapon while drunk

An Iowa City man was arrested early Monday morning after allegedly approaching a parked car while holding a weapon.

According to the police report, 22-year-old James Fitzgerald was seen carrying a gun while on the 500 block of South Lucas Street just before 2 am. The witnesses were inside a parked car when Fitzgerald reportedly made contact with them. When they refused to speak to the man, Fitzgerald allegedly slammed his gun against the driver’s side window. He then fled the area.

Police located Fitzgerald in a back alley, and he matched the description witnesses gave to them. He reportedly had slurred speech, lack of balance, and had the odor of ingested alcohol. Officers located a gun magazine on Fitzgerald’s person.

A PBT was refused.

Fitzgerald was charged with Possession or Carrying of Dangerous Weapons while Intoxicated; it’s a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to one year if convicted.
