A false report to police about shots fired has led to the arrest of an Iowa City man.

Online records show a caller to 9-1-1 reported hearing two gunshots and seeing a subject fleeing on foot on the 2200 block of Muscatine Avenue just after 1:30 Saturday morning. Investigators were unable to find any evidence of shots fired, any witnesses, or any reported injuries.

The caller, identified as 52-year-old Jeffrey Chapman of the Hilltop manufactured housing community, was found a short time later at the nearby Walgreens. Police say he admitted to calling 9-1-1, claiming he heard gunshots and screaming. Chapman has a reported history of calling police with unfounded reports of hearing gunshots.

Chapman is charged with Making a False Report to a Public Entity. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 30 days in jail.
