A Chicago man was taken into custody early Thursday morning after being found in possession of a weapon as a felon, as well as quantities of marijuana and cocaine.

Iowa City Officers were called to Shady Glen Court because 31-year-old Michael Taylor was banging on a resident’s door just after 2 am.  When they came in contact with him, Taylor was reportedly clearly intoxicated and was found with a loaded handgun by his foot.

A search allegedly found four bags of a green leafy substance consistent with marijuana, and 16 bags of a white powdery substance consistent with cocaine.

Taylor reportedly told police that he kept the gun for protection, although he acknowledged he was a convicted felon and not allowed to possess weapons. A check of court records showed Taylor convicted for felony domestic abuse assault last May.

Taylor was taken into custody and faces a number of charges. They include two controlled substance violations, possession of a dangerous weapon while intoxicated, possession of weapons as a felon, failure to affix tax stamp, marijuana possession, and public intoxication. If convicted on all counts, he faces a prison term in excess of 22 years.
