A longtime staple of the local live theater community is closing its doors after a half-century.

The board of directors of the Old Creamery Theatre in Amana posted a letter to the group’s website Friday saying the theater has closed permanently.

The letter notes the theater had already closed temporarily in March of 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Old Creamery partially reopened last fall with hopes of holding a full 2022 season, but the letter says the financial pressures became too hard to overcome. The board says federal relief money did not arrive in time.

The Old Creamery Theatre started in 1971 in Garrison, Iowa, before later moving to Amana.
