An Iowa City woman was arrested on a warrant stemming from a Sunday incident where she allegedly pepper sprayed a woman at a downtown bar/restaurant.

According to police, the incident occurred at the Airliner on South Clinton Street just after 7:30pm. 20-year-old Giana Stompanato is accused of assaulting another woman at the establishment by spraying her in the face with pepper spray. There was no reported provocation or justification for Stompanato’s actions.

The victim reported pain from the alleged attack, and officers noted that she still had visible redness on her neck from the spray irritation.

A warrant for Stompanato’s arrest was issued on Tuesday, and she was taken into custody early Wednesday morning. She’s been charged with assault causing bodily injury, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to one year if convicted.

Stompanato posted bail later that morning, and was ordered to have no contact with the victim. An arraignment will be set at a date in the future.
