Johnson County Attorney Janet Lyness says she won’t seek re-election and will retire with over 31 years in the County Attorney’s office.

Lyness has been the County Attorney for the last 15 years and is in her last year of her fourth term. She was elected the first woman County Attorney in 2006, and reelected in 2010, 2014 and 2018.

Lyness cites her office’s work on holding violent offenders accountable while addressing issues in the criminal justice system during her years as head prosecutor.

The Gazette reports that Assistant County Attorney Rachel Zimmerman has filed a notice of intent to run for County attorney but hasn’t made a formal announcement as of yet.
