A Johnson County inmate who is awaiting trial on assault with intent to commit sex abuse charges now faces new charges after allegedly breaking the finger of a Johnson County Jail sergeant.

Police say that Monday night, 25-year-old Steven Elliot was obstructing the view into his jail cell by putting paper of the cell door window. Deputies removed the paper, and Elliot was warned not to cover the window multiple times. However, Elliot again immediately covered the cell door window.

The decision was made to move Elliot to another cell so that he couldn’t cover the window. He was reportedly given multiple commands to exit the cell and enter the other holding cell, but he refused. Elliot then allegedly took a fighting stance and attempted to strike a sergeant, and had to be physically escorted to the new cell. Elliot reportedly continued to resist and kick at deputies, and a sergeant suffered a broken finger in the process that authorities say most likely will need surgery.

The sergeant was sent to Mercy Hospital for medical attention.

Elliot was charged with Interference with Official Acts causing Serious Injury, an Aggravated Misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to two years if convicted.

Elliot was taken into custody October 20th after allegedly grabbing a woman who he told was pretty and refusing to let her go. Police say Elliot reportedly approached the woman and after complimenting her on her looks, immediately grabbed and hugged her. He’s then accused of biting her neck and forcefully holding her for approximately 20 minutes.

Elliott finally let her go when a bus arrived. The victim talked to police and reported pain and redness on her neck. She also said he felt threatened, was very intimidated, alarmed and scared for her physical safety by the way Elliott acted.

He was originally charged with Assault causing Injury and 3rd degree Harassment. Prosecutors added an additional charge of assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, and he awaits a competency hearing on March 10th.

If convicted on all charges from October and the jail incident, Elliot could be sentenced to over eight years in prison.
